The last few years has seen a downturn in the UK’s market for used cars. At the moment there does not seem to be any end in sight with figures from last year showing an 11% decrease in Scotland in second hand motor sales. But the downturn is not just confined to Scotland, as Wales is also showing a significant decrease in used car sales to the tune of 8%, while the rest of the UK is showing a 7.1% drop. It will be harder therefore to find any good deals and it will also be harder for people to sell.
Many reasons abound as to why the used car market is in such a torrid state currently. Because the car industry in general is interrelated, anything that affects one segment will invariably have a knock-on effect on the rest of the industry. A lot of the reason is due to the economic downturn, with individuals keep a tighter hold on the purse strings and not buying vehicles as readily. Because of this, there would be no reason to sell their older cars. There will then be a situation whereby the numbers of used cars on the market decreases, meaning prices rise and people cannot afford the cars they want at the prices they currently are.
And the ending of the government scrappage scheme hasn’t helped the industry at all, either. This scheme had actually encouraged many individuals to buy new cars while getting rid of their older ones. Although the scheme didn’t contribute directly to an increase in used car numbers on the market, it did contribute and benefit the car industry as a whole.
These are difficult times for those looking for good value used cars, but there still are some good deals available out there it just means looking a bit harder. It is hoped that in the coming few months the numbers of individuals buying new cars (and therefore trading in their old cars) will increase, meaning these numbers would be able to trickle through to the used car segment of the industry. The car industry has always known peaks and troughs, but one thing is constant – it always bounces back from the troughs.
When you think it’s time to look out for used cars for sale, you may end up much better off by thoroughly researching the cars that interest you. Researching allows you to find the very best used cars for the category you are looking for. Once you’ve finished, you could find youself driving away from the dealers in a used MG or even a used mitsubishi.
